The confetti lowdown

As an Edinburgh wedding photographer specialising in joyful, colourful and relaxed photography, it’s no secret that my greatest love and one of my favourite parts of a wedding day is – confetti!

The Magic JOY Compoment

Confetti holds the power to transform moments into extraordinary memories. Imagine a burst of colour and joy as you and your partner step into a new chapter of your lives together. It's not just about the aesthetics; confetti has the ability to encapsulate the sheer happiness and excitement of your special day, because believe me, guest turn into the biggest kids when you give them a handful of the stuff!

I could talk about confetti all day, but instead of doing that, I've pulled together some info in blog form!

How can I use confetti on my wedding day?

There are lots of ways you can use confetti on your big day, here are just a few ideas!

Indoor Confetti: Make a grand exit from your ceremony under a shower of confetti with the help of a heap of paper disk confetti dished out to your guests as you walk back down the aisle together. Even if you’re having an indoor ceremony, this can create a picture-perfect moment as you and your partner walk down the aisle together and into your new life together! It’s worth checking with your venue if they allow it. In this instance, it’s often best to to put your confetti in bags or cones for your guests.

Outdoor Confetti: After your ceremony, I will give you a few minutes alone to catch up while I talk your guests outside and line them up for confetti tunnel for you to walk out to. For this, a big basket full of confetti super well - I personally love this option as it keeps the confetti nice and fluffy and encourages people to take bigger hand fulls!

Table Decor : Why not incorporate confetti into your table decor and centerpieces. It not only adds a pop of colour to your reception but also invites guests to share in the joy as they toss confetti during toasts or special moments!

Couples Photos: Oh, and don't forget to save some confetti for your couples' photos later in the evening! As the day turns into evening I might sneak you and your wedding tribe away for some fun photos together and we'‘ll toss some extra confetti for some extra JOY!

Elopements: I photograph a LOT of City Chambers weddings in Edinburgh and sometimes couples ask if they can still ave confetti and the answer is YES! City Chambers don’t allow it on their premises but a wee jaunt out to the Royal Mile is the perfect location for it. And it’s fine if you don’t have any guests - we’ll just get a few willing participants off the street - I have a good eye for finding prolific tossers…

Top Tips

"More is More" - Ordering Extra Confetti: Remember, when it comes to confetti, "more is more." Order extra confetti to ensure you have an abundant supply for creating spectacular moments and some serious Hero Shots in your gallery. After a more traditional confetti tunnel, any surplus confetti can be used for an all-at-once confetti toss, turning your wedding day into a kaleidoscope of joy.

Suppliers: When it comes to confetti, paper disks are KING. They comes in all the amazing colours that you can co-ordinate with your themes, or you can go all out rainbow (my fave!), or keep it classic white. It flies high in the air and floats down slowly so makes for better pictures. I always recommend Your Confetti! Their biodegradable paper disks come in over 30 pick ’n’ mix colours, suitable for both indoors and out as well as being kind to the environment. You can use my code YCLOUROBPHOTO for 15% off your order and if you book me as your photographer I will send you a little sample in your welcome pack so that you can try before you buy!

Now, I understand that not all venues allow paper confetti, and if that’s the case, don’t fear - petals can still work really well! I’ll put a few examples below - plus, they small amazing!

Add a Cannon: we know by now that more is more - so I definitely recommend adding a few confetti cannons too - these add an amazing extra burst of colour to the middle of a tunnel or they can be used later in your couples photos. I’ve had a few couples use them now and they have been amazing - I’m now addicted!

ENJOY!: The most important tip I can give you is to enjoy it! Walk slowly, keep your head up, laugh and maybe even stop in the middle for a wee smooch! I’ll remind your guests to throw UP and not AT you, but ya know, you might get a bit in your mouth…

What did they have and how did they use it?

Quite often couples ask me what confetti options were used to create some of the images on my website, so here are a few I get asked about a lot! Couples that used confetti in different ways, but all with great results.

Aisle Walk w/ Cannon - D+N opted for indoor confetti as they walked down the aisle at Summerhall in Edinburgh. Guests all had a generous bag that they chucked as the couple walked through and then Daisy set off her own cannon at the end! This confetti was from Your Confetti and was a beautiful mix of peach, lilac, pink and cream - it worked beautifully!

Outdoor Tunnel w/Cannons! - R+J’s venue didn’t allow confetti, so instead we took a handful of their closest friends and family after their ceremony and plodded down Leith Walk to find a suitable side street! We lined everyone up and off they went. In the middle there were also 2 cannons let off for some extra oomph! This was a rainbow mix and it was delicious!

natural petal confetti

Natural Petals - T+R opted for natural dried petals from their own garden. R was a keen gardener himself and had collected and dried the petals himself in preparation for the big day. Their venue didn’t allow paper, so this was a great option and smelled amazing! It toned in beautifully with the gorgeous pink exterior of The Harbour Chapel!

Confetti x2 - R+F took the more is more memo and RAN with it! They had a small but mighty wedding with just a handful of close pals and family. But, they bought double the confetti they needed. First we did a traditional tunnel out onto the royal mile, then, with the leftovers we did a bomb where we arranged their guests in a semi circle around them and they all threw their handfuls at the same time while R+F had a wee smooch in the middle - it looked absolutely EPIC and these were some of my favourite shots from the whole day. So blooming cool. R+F opted for a pink and white mix that looked beautiful against Robyn’s pink dress. This mix was perfect for winter and would also have looked great mixed with a burgundy or a darker pink too.
